I spent most of my childhood overseas, but every Christmas, we would come back to Vancouver to visit grandparents and relatives. One winter, my parents needed to shop at the Korean grocery store in Coquitlam, and there happened to be a boong-uh-bbang (taiyaki) cart outside. Unfortunately I didn't appreciate red bean at that time, and I knew that pretty much all boong-uh-bbang were filled with red bean paste only. To my delight, I discovered that this cart sold vegetable filled boong-uh-bbang! I prompted scarfed down at least three, and loved every bite of it.
For years, I remembered this little cart as a childhood memory. But now that I live here, I can get vegetable-filled boong-uh-bbang more often! The lady who runs the cart is always so nice, and I always wish I could buy more than I do. So make sure to drop by whenever you're in the area and get your veggies! -

I've literally been visiting this family's taiyaki stall for 15 years. I first discovered this little gem and taiyakis themselves at the summer night market in Richmond and instantly fell in love. I would then visit the night market every weekend (back when there was no entrance fee of course) each summer just to get my favourite red bean taiyakis. I would always crave this yummy snack for the remainder of the year while looking forward to the night market opening again the following summer. I cannot stress how my life has changed since I found out they operate year-round in Coquitlam (call me dramatic but try for yourselves!). I live in Richmond and would sometimes drive the 1 hour each way just to eat them and drive back. THANK YOU FOR EXISTING!
I might have even signed up for Yelp just to write this review. -

Growing up, I was devastated to find out that this little cart was only open for a portion of the year. I thought it was because these pastries were a winter thing... But I found out during my most recent visit that the time that they're at the night market during the months it's open for! They're usually located opposite of the newspaper stand near Hanareum Market behind the stairs and they're worth a visit.
Each fish-shaped pastry will put you back by $1 but you can opt to get 6 for $5. I believe it's cash only so be prepared. I had two of each of the available fillings:
- Red bean paste: the most traditional and in my opinion the most delicious.
- Bavarian cream: this was like a custard and it can get quite hot. But for people who aren't a fan of the red bean texture can still get something that's sweet and satisfying.
- Vegetable: I haven't seen this flavour before and I was pleasantly surprised to find a savory filling. It was reminiscent of the filling for Korean style dumplings and it was quite yummy.
They usually have the red bean fish pastries cooked and sitting warm since it's the most popular but don't be upset if you need to wait for your order. They're even yummier when they're fresh! -

Great Korean style taiyaki! I tried the red bean taiyaki. At first, I wasn't sure if I was a fan of it because the red bean filling was not very sweet, but it grew on me. When the taiyaki was hot, the outside was nice and crisp as well. It got a little soggy after sitting for a few hours, but it still tasted good. This is a perfect snack for chilly winter Vancouver days.
They're only $1 CAD for each or $5 for 6. I believe the hotteok were $1.50 each. I didn't try them, but those looked tasty as well. I'll be back if I'm ever in the Burnaby/Coquitlam area! -

So many delicious taiyaki and Korean pancakes! All for a great price too! It's a little cart next to hannam market. The sweet Korean pancake has a filling resembling apple pie. The red bean taiyaki is not too sweet which I like while the custard is creamy and not overly sweet. The veggie taiyaki has a dumpling like filling and is also delicious! Anything at this cart is a must!
